Initiatives to Increase Partnership Capacity
The Gulf of Maine River Herring Network is convened by two DFP partner organizations—Manomet Conservation Sciences and Maine Center for Coastal Fisheries—and several other members are network participants. The network aims to advance collaborative research and co-management of river herring by bringing together the wide range of people and organizations working on river herring across the Gulf of Maine. Awards:
- NOAA Restoring Fish Passage through Barrier Removal: $9M Grant Awarded to DSF for Cherryfield Ice Dam Removal (project partners DSF, MCHT, TNC, Town of Cherryfield)
- US Department of Interior: $2.9M Grant Awarded to fund the Whiting Mill Pond Dam Rehabilitation and Fish Ladder project. Construction is anticipated for 2025 (project partners DSF, MCHT, SCEC, Town of Whiting)

Community Engagement
DFP partners (DSF, DEI, MCHT) successfully completed the first year of a two-year watershed education project, Reconnecting Downeast Maine’s Watersheds and Communities. The project wrapped up with spring Network meetings and classroom field trips. Member organizations and educators participating in this effort engaged approximately 100 students in grades 5-8 in field trips across Washington County to explore spring sea-run fish migrations and invasive green crab counts.
